What Exactly Is "Boot Camp"?

What's this all about? Outside? What if it rains? It's too early for me, pal. Outdoor fitness boot camps have proliferated in the temperate Bay Area, where ocean views, bridges and famous hills make these workouts challenging and beautiful.

The format creates camaraderie among the participants, who encourage each other to make it through . The exercises give each woman a chance to test her own limits and strengths. Every boot camp is different, depending on the style of the leaders and the abilities of the participants. Two weeks, 3 weeks, SIX weeks--you're committed and focused--not to mention, sore. Fortunately, in the Bay area, you can choose a style that suits YOU. Here are some examples of Boot Camp styles: 1. Fitness - Emphasizes fitness, challenges, and commitment. May use weights and other hand equipment. You'll see all sorts: new moms, pot bellied execs, and hip urban types.

2. Military - Where "recruits" follow drills or exercises similar to U.S. military basic training. Again, more people than you'd think dig the discipline and the "toughen up" approach. You'll see the same group as above, along with some former military types re-living the experience.

3. Sweat Equals Love Fitness (SELF) Combining moves from power yoga, kickboxing, and basic training, our participants can count on a workout that challenges and encourages you. No equipment necessary. Emphasis on getting strong, as opposed to thin, and using your possibly dormant sense of humor. All races and genders are most welcome.
